Every episode of The Ponzi Playbook is built from publicly available information. Our primary sources are government and court records, including but not limited to:
We also draw on other publicly available material, including published news reporting, publicly accessible websites, archived web pages (such as those preserved by the Internet Archive), publicly posted social media content, promotional and marketing materials distributed by the subjects of our reporting, publicly filed corporate and property records, and interviews conducted with willing participants.
Where a news account and a government record conflict on a matter of fact, we treat the government record as authoritative.
We try to be precise about the posture of every case we cover, and we ask listeners to be equally precise in what they take away.
An indictment, complaint, or regulatory charge is an allegation. A person or entity charged with an offense is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. Where we describe conduct that has been alleged but not adjudicated, we intend it to be understood as an allegation drawn from the cited filing, not as a finding of fact.
Where a matter has been resolved — by conviction, guilty plea, settlement, judgment, dismissal, or acquittal — we aim to say so plainly.
Legal proceedings continue after we publish. Convictions are appealed and sometimes overturned. Charges are dismissed. Settlements are reached. Sentences are reduced. Judgments are vacated.
An episode reflects our understanding of the public record as of its publication date, which appears on every episode page. We do not routinely revise past episodes as cases develop. If you are researching a specific case or person, consult current court records rather than relying on an episode as a present-tense account.
